Siberian cats are a unique breed native to Russia. They are new to the United States and were imported here only since the 1990's. They are the national cat of Russia and are a natural breed that has existed there for hundreds of years. Siberians are one of only 3 natural breeds of domesticated cat. This means that they have not been bred with any other variety to create a certain "look". They are exactly as God created them...beautiful, highly intelligent and loyal.
They are the second largest breed of domestic cat and still rare in the United States. They are a mild mannered cat who is a very loyal and loving family member. Because they are more like dogs than cats, they are very trainable. They are not aloof like other cat breeds. They are very sociable and really enjoy attention from their humans.
The Siberian cat is an ancient medium-long haired breed believed to be the ancestor from which all modern day long-haired cats are evolved. After living in the cold Russian climate for many generations, over time it has developed a hardy constitution. In order to survive harsh conditions it developed a dense triple fur coat that is water resistant. Siberians are not true shedders, nor does their fur mat easily.
Color point Siberians are thought to have originated near the Neva River in St. Petersburg. They were named Neva Masquerade after the gorgeous points on their faces and limbs. Color points are considered very rare in the United States.
The Siberian cats are considered HYPO-allergenic. HYPO meaning low NOT Anti Allergic. Many people with cat allergies may have little or no reaction to them. Due to the low level of Feline d1 protein (Fel-d10 in their saliva). For this reason, these cats are becoming especially popular with allergy sufferers.
